At least 292,000 people have died and more than 4,272,880 are infected.

The new coronavirus pandemic has killed at least 292,000 people and infected more than 4.2 million worldwide since December, according to an AFP agency report, based on official data.

According to data collected by the French news agency, at least 292,000 people have died and there are more than 4,272,880 infected in 195 countries and territories since the epidemic began in December 2019 in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

AFP warns that the number of diagnosed cases reflects only a fraction of the actual total infections, as a large number of countries are testing only those cases that require hospital treatment. Among these cases, at least 1,462,000 were considered cured.

The United States, which recorded the first death linked to covid-19 in early February, is the country most affected in terms of number of deaths and cases, with 82,389 deaths in 1,370,016 cases.

At least 230,287 people have been declared cured by the United States authorities.

After the United States, the countries most affected are the United Kingdom with 32,692 deaths for 226,463 cases, Italy with 30,911 deaths (221,216 cases), Spain with 27,104 deaths (228,691 cases) and France with 26,991 (178,225 cases).

China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macau), where the epidemic began in late December, accounted for 82,926 cases (seven new between Tuesday and today), including 4,633 deaths and 78,189 recoveries.

Europe totaled 159,737 deaths to 1,793,753 cases, the United States and Canada 87,672 deaths (1,441,173 cases), Latin America and the Caribbean 23,091 deaths (402,804 cases), Asia 11,184 deaths (316,088 cases), Middle East 7,787 deaths (241,232 cases) ), Africa 2,403 deaths (69,515 cases) and Oceania 126 deaths (8,316 cases).

This assessment was carried out using data collected by AFP from health authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Portugal, with 1,175 registered deaths and 28,132 confirmed cases, is the 22nd country in the world with the most deaths and the 23rd in number of infections.
