I am the real Portugal-China Chamber of Commerce

Rute Coelho

Y-Ping-Chow, president of the League of Chinese in Portugal, founded a new Portugal-China Chamber of Commerce and opened a verbal war with the former Luso-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, created in 1977.

The war in the market of economic relations between Portugal and China is open because now there is not one but two Portuguese-Chinese Chambers of Commerce. If it seems confusing, it’s because it is.

A week ago, the Portugal-China PME Chamber of Commerce (CCPC-PME) was created, led by the well-known leader of the Chinese League in Portugal, Y-Ping-Chow.

The Portuguese-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCILC) was founded 43 years ago, chaired by João Marques da Cruz, who claims the title of “true and only” Chamber of Commerce in this sector and informed the Portuguese Government and the Chinese Embassy of that. “We informed that the Chamber of Commerce is us. But we are not going to court,” Marques da Cruz tells Plataforma.

This Portuguese manager based in Macau,is a citizen of the Chinese territory and, before the Covid-19 pandemic, he divided his time between Macau, Hong Kong and Portugal.

Vitalino Canas, a former PS deputy and lawyer, has “a relationship with Chinese things”, as he says, since he went to Macau in 1986. “I am a consultant for the new Chamber of Commerce and I’m not of the old one because they never invited me” .
