Machado had hoped to persuade Trump to withdraw support for Rodríguez’s interim government, but the administration remains focused on “frank and positive” discussions about Venezuela, according to BBC. Regarding the gift, the Nobel Committee clarified that while a physical medal can change owners, the laureate title is not transferable.
The high-profile meeting follows the recent U.S. capture of former President Nicolás Maduro on drug-trafficking charges. Although Trump accepted the medal – calling it a “wonderful gesture of mutual respect” – he has declined to endorse Machado, who claimed victory in the disputed 2024 election. Instead, the President maintains diplomatic channels with acting head of state Delcy Rodríguez, whom he recently praised as “terrific.”
This diplomatic maneuvering coincides with U.S. efforts to reshape Venezuela’s energy sector. Officials recently confirmed a $500 million dollars sale of Venezuelan oil while continuing to seize tankers suspected of violating sanctions.
Meanwhile, Rodríguez signaled openness to further engagement, stating she would “stand tall” if called to Washington for diplomatic talks.
