“The Training Project for Portuguese Language Teachers in the 3rd Cycle of Basic Education (i.e. years 7,8,9), which we formalised on this day by signing a supplementary agreement and a project document, stems from a deep commitment: to ensure that all our teachers have the linguistic, communicative, didactic-pedagogical and methodological skills necessary to ensure the successful implementation of the new national curriculum, which came into force in the 2025 academic year,” said Dulce de Jesus.
The Timorese Minister of Education was speaking at the signing ceremony for the training programme, which will last four years (2025 to 2028). The project will cover a total of 644 Portuguese language teachers from the 3rd Cycle of Basic Education, who are directly involved in the teaching and learning process of young Timorese.
“To improve this process, we will have the technical support of 17 Brazilian teacher-coordinators, who will work in a joint teaching regime, and 81 Timorese teachers, who will act as multiplier teachers, thus ensuring the sustainability and continuity of training in the future,” explained the Timorese minister.
The project also includes the production of new teaching materials for the 7th, 8th and 9th years, the creation of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and the establishment, at the National Institute for the Training of Teachers and Education Professionals (INFORDEPE), of a Portuguese Teacher Training Centre, which will function as a permanent technical and pedagogical support structure.
We all understand that this is a strategic and ambitious investment. An investment that goes beyond simple teacher training and represents the construction of a sustainable model for the future of training and education in East Timor,” added Dulce de Jesus.
The Brazilian ambassador to East Timor, Ricardo José Leal, said that the Brazilian Government is committed to continuing to collaborate with East Timor, especially in the promotion and dissemination of the Portuguese language. “Teacher training aims to empower teachers and expand the use of the Portuguese language, especially in primary education,” said the Brazilian diplomat.
The project is supported by the Brazilian Government through the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) and the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), which have provided consistent technical and scientific support to improve the education system in Timor-Leste.
