Angolan population expands 42% in 10 years to 36.6M in 2024

Angola had 36.6 million inhabitants at the end of 2024, 10.8 million more than in 2014, 42% more in ten years, according to the results of the General Population and Housing Census 2024 released on Thursday.

The population maintains a markedly young profile, with 62% of residents under 25 and an average age of 23.2 years (20.6 years in 2014). The census conducted on 19 September 2024 indicates that 51% of the population is women and 49% are men. The latest figures point to 96 men for every 100 women, up from 94 in 2014.

The country now has 9.1 million households, spread across more than 9 million dwellings, maintaining an average of 3.9 people per household, similar to that recorded in the previous census. In terms of basic conditions, 37% of households have access to piped water in the house, the yard, or a neighbour’s.

Luanda province continues to have the largest population, now 8.8 million, 1.9 million more than in 2014. This is followed by the provinces of Huíla, Huambo, Benguela, Cuanza Sul, Bié and Uíje, all with more than two million inhabitants.

At the other end of the spectrum, Cuando remains the least populated province, with just over 138,000 residents, and is part of the group of regions that don’t reach 700,000 inhabitants, which includes Zaire, Cuanza Norte, Moxico, Cubango and Moxico Leste.

The ten most populous municipalities account for 24% of the Angolan population, around 8.6 million people, of which seven are in Luanda (Kilamba Kiaxi, Cacuaco, Mulenvos, Viana, Cazenga, Maianga and Camama).

In terms of population density, Luanda remains the most densely populated territory, with 5,349.3 inhabitants per square kilometre, compared to 1.3 in Cuando. Portuguese is spoken by 45.5% of the population, followed by Umbundo (17.1%), Kimbundu (10.8%), Tchokwe (6.9%) and Kikongo (6.8%).

Ovimbundo remains the largest ethnolinguistic group in the country, representing 29.1% of the population, followed by Kimbundu (27%) and Bakongo (14.4%). The census included, for the first time, specific information on the population with albinism, totalling 1.6 million people, 342,423 of whom are aged between 15 and 64.

It is not possible to compare indicators such as average life expectancy or the fertility rate, because the data from the 2014 Census, which was used to produce the results, is not included in the results released for the new 2024 Census.
