Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said this Wednesday (1st) that the country’s government will applaud the peace plan presented by U.S. President Donald Trump, aimed at ending the war between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
“Without a doubt we will applaud it publicly, possibly later today, because the plan’s goal is exactly what we have always defended since the beginning of the conflict, when we were still on the Security Council [of the UN],” said the chancellor.
“We presented resolutions to that effect, which were, at the time, vetoed by a member country,” Vieira continued, without directly naming the United States, which vetoed resolutions calling for a ceasefire in the Middle East on six different occasions.
President Lula criticized Israel several times throughout his current term. Last year, he was declared “persona non grata” after comparing Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip to the Nazi Holocaust.
Trump announced on Monday (29) a plan to end the war in Gaza, which Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said he had agreed to. The statement was given to the press after a meeting between the leaders in Washington. According to Trump, if Hamas agrees to the idea, the war should end immediately —the terrorist group, however, has not yet given its formal response.
