Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) voted on Tuesday (9) to convict Jair Bolsonaro for leading a coup plot and the other defendants in the case for their involvement in the plan to remain in power after the former president’s defeat to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the 2022 election.
In casting his vote during the trial of the central core of the coup plot following the 2022 election, in which Bolsonaro is one of the defendants, the justice pointed out that the former Brazilian president led actions to stay in power.
“The leader of the criminal group makes it clear, in his own voice, publicly, that he would never accept a defeat at the polls, a democratic defeat in the elections, that he would never comply with the people’s will,” he said, referring to the former president’s role.
The justice pointed to “Jair Bolsonaro’s knowledge and consent regarding the plan to neutralize public authorities,” in reference to the proposal that involved the arrest of a justice and the assassination of the then president-elect.
