U.S. President Donald Trump is wrong to ask the Brazilian judiciary to stop the trial of Jair Bolsonaro in a letter regarding the 50% tariff hike on Brazilian exports to the U.S., according to 57% of Brazilians surveyed by Datafolha.
For 89%, the tariffs will harm the national economy, and for 77%, they will also affect their personal situation. Datafolha interviewed 2,004 people on July 29 and 30, before the decree that excluded 40% of Brazilian exports from the sanctions.
Criticism and concern are present even among those who voted for Bolsonaro in 2022. In that group, 28% say Trump is wrong to link the tariff hike to the former president’s trial, and 92% believe the tariffs are harmful to Brazil’s economy.
Among all respondents, 36% agree with the Republican’s decision to tie the tariffs to Bolsonaro’s legal situation, and 7% see no negative economic impact.
A total of 71% say they are well or somewhat informed about the issue, while 18% say they are unaware of it.
