President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called the U.S. ban on Brazilian Supreme Court justices “arbitrary and without foundation.” The measure was announced by Donald Trump’s administration on Friday night (18).
“My solidarity and support to the justices of the Supreme Federal Court targeted by yet another arbitrary and utterly baseless act by the United States government,” the president wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) profile.
“Interference by one country in another’s justice system is unacceptable and violates the basic principles of respect and national sovereignty,” said the Workers’ Party leader.
The sanctions against Alexandre de Moraes and seven other Supreme Court justices came after the Federal Police carried out a search operation against former president Jair Bolsonaro, authorized by the court. He is now subject to freedom restrictions.
Bolsonaro is wearing an electronic ankle monitor. He is barred from leaving home between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., from approaching embassies, or contacting foreign diplomats.
