US government greenlights Nvidia H20 chip sales to China

The US government recently approved Nvidia's sale of H20 artificial intelligence chips to the Chinese market, a decision that delighted CEO Jensen Huang, who expressed his desire to ship the chips as soon as possible. Concurrently, Nvidia announced the upcoming launch of a new graphics card, the RTX Pro, specifically tailored to meet the demands of the Chinese market.

This development follows a ban imposed by the US government in April of this year, which blocked Nvidia from selling H20 chips to China. The H20, an AI accelerator designed for the Chinese market, offers approximately 70 percent of the performance of Nvidia’s top-tier H100 chip and was previously the company’s most powerful AI chip available in China. The prohibition resulted in billions of dollars in inventory losses for Nvidia.

Jensen Huang is scheduled to attend the opening ceremony of the 3rd China International Supply Chain Expo in Beijing tomorrow, marking his third visit to China this year. Following the announcement of the lifted ban, Nvidia’s stock price saw a more than 3 percent increase in after-hours trading, reaching $169.46 us dollars.

It’s understood that Huang met with President Donald Trump last week before heading to Beijing for the supply chain expo this week. He had previously informed clients that the company was applying for new H20 sales licenses and was optimistic about their approval. Nvidia is also releasing new GPUs that comply with Chinese regulatory requirements.

Huang has repeatedly emphasized the importance of the Chinese market recently, criticizing US chip restriction policies as “failures” that have paradoxically accelerated the development of local Chinese technology, such as Huawei. However, his current visit to China has drawn attention from US politicians. On July 11th, a bipartisan group of senators sent a joint letter cautioning him to avoid contact with companies linked to the Chinese military or intelligence agencies and to refrain from discussing matters that could exploit US export control loopholes.
