Taiwan issues warning of “air attack”

Taiwan's Defense Ministry sent a cellphone message to the island's residents this Tuesday warning of an "air attack", after Beijing announced the successful launch of a satellite.

The alert that automatically appeared on cell phone screens called on the population to “be careful”, four days before Taiwan’s presidential and legislative elections. The Chinese and English versions differ, however, in the design of the object that allegedly crossed the island’s airspace.

“Air attack alert: missile flying over Taiwan airspace, be careful”, reads the English version of the message, shared with Lusa by a resident of the territory.

The Chinese version states that China launched a satellite at 15:04 (07:04, in Lisbon), which crossed the airspace of southern Taiwan.

“If an unknown object is found, please notify the police,” the ministry message added.
