US gay couples rush to receive blessings after Pope’s decision

Jesuit James Martin, one of the biggest defenders of the opening of the church, celebrates the possibility of granting them in public

A priest for more than two decades, Jesuit James Martin has already granted thousands of blessings — on rosaries, on babies, on houses, on statues of saints, on brides and grooms.

But never before has he been allowed to bless a same-sex couple — until last Monday (18), when Pope Francis announced the permission for these blessings, in a historic statement.

On Tuesday morning (18), Damian Steidl Jack, 44, and her husband, Jason Steidl Jack, 38, stood before Martin in a living room in Manhattan, New York. The couple, a little late due to the slowness of the subway, were dressed casually. Damian, a floral designer, complimented Martin on the Christmas tree’s pine scent.
