Violent crime increases in Macau

Macau authorities recorded a 25.4 per cent increase in overall crime in the first half of this year, compared to the same period last year, according to official data released today.

Crimes against people, against property, against life in society and against the territory grew by 0.9 per cent, 44.5 per cent, 33 per cent and 46.7 per cent, respectively, security authorities informed at a press conference.

Violent crime also rose (47 per cent), with the biggest increases being recorded in robberies (240 per cent) and kidnappings (200 per cent).

However, the Secretary for Security noted that the data in general terms point to a decrease when compared with the first half of 2019, before the covid-19 pandemic.

However, the Secretary for Security noted that the data in general terms point to a decrease when compared with the first half of 2019, before the covid-19 pandemic.

“It is believed that this change in recorded numbers [from 2022 to 2023] is related to the increase in tourists, the economic recovery and the easing of the pandemic situation”, highlighted Wong Sio Chak.

On the other hand, the official highlighted that “in recent years, there has been a tendency towards an increase in cases of fraud in telecommunications and online”, a trend that can be explained, he argued, “with the change in people’s way of life and growing dependence on the internet.”

Wong also flagged that “the total number of gaming-related crimes in the first half of 2023 has increased compared to the same period last year, but it is still less than half of the total number of gaming-related crimes in the same period of 2019.” ”, so “the current security situation is stable”.

The government official also highlighted “the improvement in the efficiency of investigation and the capacity to combat crime” with the video surveillance system “as a mechanism to assist in the investigation”, and which included cases of violent crime.

The video surveillance system in Macau, a territory measuring just over 30 square kilometers, known as “Eyes in the Sky”, consists of more than 1,700 cameras, with authorities intending to install another 680.
