Guterres highlights progress at the UN in the face of gender parity but shows concern for the future

António Guterres lamented the existence of “gaps” in gender parity, assessing that “on the ground, advances have been slow and, in some cases, setbacks have been recorded”.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, celebrated this Monday the advances achieved during his mandate towards gender parity within the Organization, but expressed concern about the decrease of women in entry-level secretarial positions. .

Marking the 5th anniversary of his strategy on gender parity at the UN, Guterres indicated that achieving such parity was a priority in his first term as leader of the United Nations and that it remains a priority issue in his second term.

“Our male-dominated world harms both men and women. (…) It is vital that the United Nations represent the values it stands for – the values enshrined in the Charter – and lead by example. Gender parity among our people is the only way to achieve gender equality in our work”, defended Guterres in New York.
