Population at risk of poverty practically excluded from covid support

Only 13.8% of the Portuguese had access to some kind of state subsidy in 2021, according to Eurostat. About 20% of families lost income in the second year of the pandemic.

More than 86% of the Portuguese population at risk of poverty did not have access to the support launched by the government of António Costa in 2021 to mitigate the negative impacts of covid-19. According to a Eurostat report, published this Tuesday, only 13.8% of the poorest Portuguese families received some kind of state subsidy in the second year of the pandemic. That is, more than 86% of households with serious financial difficulties were excluded.

At a global level, considering all income levels, the number of families that benefited from some kind of public support is also low: only 13%, according to the European Union (EU) statistics office.

Considering the ranking prepared by Eurostat, Portugal is the sixth country, among a list of 11 EU Member States, which covered fewer families in its aid package, behind Hungary, Romania, Holland, Croatia and Bulgaria.

Conversely, Belgium comes first in the number of families covered by anti-covid support: 56% of taxpayers, in general, received help and 46.1% of families at risk of poverty had access to public subsidies.

Spain and Greece also outperformed Portugal by benefiting a larger number of households. The Spanish government allocated support to 27.6% of families in general and 24.4% of people at risk of poverty. In the Greek state, 39.1% of the population and 38.4% of the poorest households received aid.
