GDP contracted by 39.3% in the second quarter in Macau

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) shrank by 39.3 percent, in real terms, during the second quarter of this year, compared to the same period in 2021. The figures from the Directorate of Statistics and Census Services (DSEC) increasingly prove the impact of the measures adopted to deal with covid-19, both in Macau and in the interior, the main tourist market in the region.

According to Friday’s data, this reduction is the second consecutive in real terms. DSEC recalls that in the comparison between the second quarter of 2020 and the same period last year, the fall had been 66.3 percent, that is, almost two thirds of the economy.

If 2020 was a bad year for tourism, the situation only got worse the following year. According to the DSEC, “due to the pandemic”, the number of visitors who entered the MSAR between April and May dropped by 27.5 percent.

At the same time, exports of services declined by 48.6 percent year-on-year, mainly in the gaming sector and other tourism services, with reductions of 69.6 percent and 41.4 percent, respectively. In the downward trend, exports of goods also stand out, with a reduction of 36 percent.
