The chief scientist of the World Health Organization said that the exposure of the world population to the new coronavirus is still far from the 50 to 60% needed for group immunity.
Group immunity generally occurs through vaccination and occurs when the majority of the population is immunized against a disease, preventing its continued transmission.
In a virtual question and answer session, Soumya Swaminathan said that serological tests carried out in some countries affected by the covid-19 pandemic show that only 5 to 10% of people have antibodies, although in some nations the number reaches 20%.
“As waves of this disease reach countries, people will develop antibodies and we hope that they will have immunity for some time to serve as barriers and curbs for infection,” he said.
