In Brazil there is an illiterate population higher than Portugal: 11 million

The illiteracy rate still slows down, dropping to 6.6% in 2019. Brazil still has 11.041 million illiterates, that is, people who have completed 15 years of age without learning to read or write

The vast majority of them, about 76%, were black or brown. The data are from the National Continuous Household Sample Survey: Education 2019, released this Wednesday by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

“The concentration of illiteracy is of age and race. The illiteracy rate is even higher if I restrict people aged 60 or over (of age) and in addition to the color black or brown ”, pointed out Adriana Beringuy, analyst at IBGE’s Work and Income Coordination.

However, almost six out of ten illiterates in the country live in the Northeast region, where there was a slight worsening in illiteracy compared to the previous year, contrary to the trend in other regions. The illiteracy rate in the Northeast is more than double the national illiteracy rate: 13.9%, with 6.2 million people in this condition. In the South, it is only 3.30%.
