In Europe, age is a risk factor. In Brazil is the address and skin color

Studies indicate that the place where they live and the color of their skin define the border between those who are more or less likely to contract covid-19 and die from the disease in the country.

In Grajaú, on the outskirts of São Paulo, Denner Silva Melo is 2.5 percent more likely to contract Covid-19 than in other areas of São Paulo, a sign of the inequality of the largest Brazilian city, which is reflected in the lack of basic infrastructure for millions.

“People are not respecting the quarantine in poor neighborhoods, which is why the virus spreads more among people from the periphery, with low incomes”, says Dener Silva Melo, who lives a kilometer and a half from the Grajaú bus station.

Unlike in Europe, where age is the most decisive factor in the mortality rate, in São Paulo, studies indicate that the address and skin color define the border between those who are more or less likely to contract covid. -19 and die of the disease.
