New strain of the Zika virus circulates in Brazil and may originate epidemic

Isabel Alves

A new strain of the Zika virus has been detected in circulation in Brazil and the possibility of a new epidemic has gained more strength, informed the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), after conducting a study

Two strains of the Zika virus are known: the Asian and the African (subdivided into eastern and western). Through a tool that monitors the genetic sequences of the virus, scientists at the Center for Data Integration and Knowledge for Health (Cidacs) at Fiocruz Bahia detected, for the first time in the country, an African type of Zika, with the potential to originate a new Epidemic.

“The African lineage was isolated in two different regions of Brazil: in the South, coming from Rio Grande do Sul, and in the Southeast, from Rio de Janeiro”, informs the study by Fiocruz, the largest medical research center in Latin America.
