What separates China and India? An ill-resolved frontier

Eduardo Pedroso da Costa

Border tension in the Himalayas is increasing between the two countries, which accuse each other of crossing territory.

China and India are currently in tension due to border clashes in the Himalayas. Last Tuesday, 20 Indian soldiers died and it is estimated that five Chinese soldiers also died in an episode of violence in Galwan Valley, in the eastern sector of Ladakh, in the Himalayas.

The two countries have a territorial dispute that has been going on for decades: at least since 1962. In 1975, the clash resulted in four Indian soldiers killed. The border is made up of ice lakes and stands out for the mountainous characteristics of the region.

Both have a strong territorial dispute: India accuses China of occupying 38 thousand square kilometers of space that belongs to it, while China claims 90 thousand square kilometers of territory.
