“Renewables can make Portugal Qatar in Europe”

APREN’s president says that the country can go from being energy poor in the light of oil to rich with renewables. Energy transition will help to get out of the recession.

With renewable resources “much more abundant” than the rest of Europe if added to wind and solar energy, Portugal is able to create an industry hub and become the continent’s Qatar. “Instead of having oil, we have all the renewable resources combined, together with storage capacity and production of green hydrogen”, stresses the new president of the Portuguese Association of Renewable Energies (APREN).

Pedro Amaral Jorge, until now vice president, took the lead at the end of March, and speaks to Dinheiro Vivo about the sector’s concerns regarding the solar auction for 2020, which the government set in motion last week. “Portugal is able to move from an energy poor country in the light of fossil fuels to an energy rich country in the light of renewables.”
