German Chancellor Angela Merkel decided to postpone the summit between the European Union and China, which was scheduled for September 14, which was justified by the new coronavirus pandemic.
The decision was communicated to the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, during a telephone call, in which the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, also participated, a spokesman for the German Government said today.
“They agreed that, due to the coronavirus pandemic, it would not be possible to hold (the summit) on the scheduled date, so it will be done later”, said the spokesman, in a message distributed through the social network Twitter, in which he said that the three parties had highlighted “the relevance” of the meeting.
Last week, the German Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas, described the dialogue with China as one of Germany’s “priorities”, when he held the rotating presidency of the European Union, from July 1st, having at the time refused the postponement of the summit, which was to have Hong Kong as one of the central themes.
“Precisely in this case, it is necessary to sit at the table, as the European Union, with a unique position, to talk about unpleasant topics”, said Maas then.
