Covid-19: Africa with more than 24,000 infections and 1,191 deaths

According to the African Union’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours, the number of registered deaths has risen from 1,158 to 1,191 while infections have increased from 23,505 to 24,686.

Of these 24,686 infected patients, 6,425 were reported to have recovered.

North Africa remains the region most affected by the disease with 10,469 cases, 841 deaths and 2,602 recovered patients.

Southern Africa accounts for 70 deaths in 3,711 cases of covid-19 and 1,121 recovered patients.

In West Africa, there are 5,774 infections, 147 deaths and 1,613 recovered patients.

The pandemic affects 52 of the 55 countries and territories in Africa, with five countries – South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Cameroon – concentrating almost half of infections by the new coronavirus and more than two thirds of deaths associated with the disease.

Egypt reports 3,490 infected and 264 dead, South Africa counts 3,465 infected patients and 58 deaths, while Morocco totals 3,209 cases and 145 fatalities and Cameroon counts 43 deaths out of 1,163 infected.

The largest number of fatalities is recorded in Algeria, which accounts for 392 deaths in 2,811 infected patients.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Cape Verde leads in number of infections, with 68 cases and one death.

Guinea-Bissau accounts for 50 people infected with the new coronavirus and Mozambique has 39 reported cases of the disease.

Angola has 24 confirmed cases of covid-19 and two deaths and São Tomé and Príncipe, the last Portuguese-speaking African country to detect the disease in its territory, has three positive cases.

In Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), 83 positive cases of infection are confirmed, according to Africa CDC.

Globally, according to an AFP report, the covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 176,000 deaths and infected more than 2.5 million people in 193 countries and territories.
