The exchange of insults began last week after O’Leary refused to allow the use of Starlink internet – from one of Elon Musk’s companies – on Ryanair planes. The airline’s CEO revealed that implementing this idea would cost the airline up to $250 million (approximately €213 million) per year and that its passengers “would not be willing to pay for the service” on short, low-cost routes. The issue was the installation of antennas on the planes, which would affect the aircraft’s aerodynamic capabilities and lead to increased fuel consumption.
Following this response, Musk quickly reacted. The Tesla CEO mentioned his desire to buy the airline and launched a poll among his followers on his official X account, accompanied by the question “Should I buy Ryanair and put someone whose real name is Ryan in charge?”. The post, a reference to Tony Ryan, the company’s co-founder who died in 2007, garnered nearly 700,000 responses.
