Following the fatal shooting of the 34-year-old man on Thursday, Tang disclosed that the suspect was likely experiencing mental instability, potentially exacerbated by drug use, as authorities discovered suspected substances in his possession, the South China Morning Post reported.
“It was evident that [the suspect] was acting irrationally at the time,” Tang stated during a radio interview on Friday. He emphasized that the critical decision made by the officers was necessary to prevent harm to the public.
The incident occurred around 7 PM near Tuen Mun Town Hall on Tuen Wui Road, where police reported that the man had threatened individuals with a 30cm knife. They affirmed that the responding officers had no options left but to use lethal force to safeguard a bystander.
Authorities confirm that the deceased holds a Hong Kong identity card and preliminary information from his family suggests a history of mental health issues, which is still under investigation by local officials.
