Young Police Officer Injured in The Head in Bondi Beach Attack Released from Hospital

Probationary Constable Jack Hibbert, who was shot in the head during the Hanukkah attack at Bondi Beach, has been released from hospital and is recovering at home, his family confirmed.

The 22-year-old officer, just four months into his role, was also hit in the shoulder and has lost sight in one eye. Despite his injuries, Hibbert continued assisting festival attendees until he was physically unable to do so, according to his family and colleagues.

In a statement, the family expressed gratitude for public support and praised the medical staff for their “exceptional care,” adding that having Jack home for Christmas “truly feels like a miracle.” They noted that Hibbert will continue to need space and support during his recovery.

Hibbert was one of two officers injured during the attack. Constable Scott Dyson, 25, remains hospitalized. Authorities have classified the incident as a terrorist attack, with suspects allegedly inspired by Islamic State ideology targeting the Jewish festival. Naveed Akram, 24, has been charged with 59 offenses, including 15 counts of murder and one of terrorism, while his father, Sajid Akram, was shot dead at the scene.

Court documents released on Monday reveal that the suspects meticulously planned the attack for months and conducted reconnaissance in Bondi two days before the shooting.

Local police and emergency services continue to investigate the attack, while the community honors the bravery of Hibbert and other responders who risked their lives to protect festival-goers.
