The United States on Tuesday announced new sanctions against the Taliban in retaliation for their treatment of Afghan women.
“Today, I announce visa restrictions for current and former Taliban members and other individuals deemed responsible or complicit in the repression of women and girls in Afghanistan through restrictive policies and violence,” said Secretary of State Antony blink.
According to the secretary, Afghanistan remains, “for more than a year, the only country in the world where girls are systematically banned from attending school after the sixth grade”.
Girls’ education is a sensitive issue in the mostly Sunni country. The Taliban regained power in August 2021, after the Americans had withdrawn, and banned girls from attending high school. Students, however, can attend universities.
