“After the nightly missile attack on Zaporijia, at least 20 houses and about 50 multi-story buildings were damaged. 17 people died,” wrote Anatoliy Kurtev, secretary of the Zaporijia City Council, on the social network Telegram. Four schools were also damaged, he added.
Zelensky and regional official Oleksandr Starukh provided a lower death toll, citing 12 dead, but Starukh had cautioned that more victims could be under the rubble as the search and rescue operation progressed.
“Zaporijia again. Merciless attacks against peaceful people again. In residential buildings, even in the middle of the night,” Zelensky said after Sunday’s attack, adding that 49 people, including six children, were in the hospital.
