China and Russia yesterday, at the United Nations Security Council, distinguished themselves from a general condemnation of the test with a ballistic missile carried out by North Korea and which flew over the territory of Japan. With the exception of Russia and China, all members of the Security Council criticize the North Korean missile launch, saying that several United Nations resolutions were violated.
Some countries also called for additional measures against the Government of Pyonyang, which is already subject to strong international sanctions. However, the imposition of new sanctions seems impossible due to the position of Russia and China, which, last May, already vetoed a resolution to that effect, having maintained the same line yesterday.
Moscow and Beijing have blamed the United States and its allies for North Korea’s latest weapons tests, saying they were carried out in response to its military maneuvers in the region. “It is obvious that Pyongyang’s missile launches are a consequence of the short-sighted and belligerent military activity around the country carried out by the United States”, said the Russian representative at the session, Anna Evstigneeva.
