European gas demand will suffer a record drop of 10%

European gas demand will suffer a record 10% drop this year due to rising prices, slowing Russian exports and contractionary consumption policies, the International Energy Agency (IEA) reported this Monday.

The scenario is outlined by the IEA in its quarterly report on the gas market, in which, recognizing a high degree of uncertainty, it revises its own forecasts downwards and estimates that demand in Europe will decline by another 4% in 2023.

The expected reduction for this year in Europe means a cut of 54 billion cubic meters and will lead to a drop of 0.8% on a global scale, as historically high prices are having an effect all over the world.

During the first eight months of this year, Europe absorbed 10% less gas than in the same period in 2021, due to sharp contractions in the residential and commercial sectors (-12%) and even more in industrial uses (-15%).
