“The World Health Organization (WHO) is a global partner and the organization in which we all seek guidance and support. Therefore, cutting their funds will definitely impact on countries’ ability to respond appropriately,” said John Nkengasong.
Recognizing the strong impacts on the poorest families of the prolonged mandatory confinements that are being implemented in an increasing number of countries as a way to halt the spread of the virus, Nkengasong said that “the gains from this long-term pain will be incalculable”.
“We are between a rock and a hard place” in the balance between health and economic needs, he said.
