Consulate General of Mozambique in Macau calls for donations following devastating floods

The Consulate General of Mozambique in Macau has issued an urgent appeal for international aid after catastrophic floods, triggered by torrential rainfall, have displaced more than 600,000 people and caused widespread destruction across the southern and central regions of the southeast African nation.

In a formal request for support distributed this week, authorities detailed severe damage to homes, infrastructure, and agriculture, warning that the scale of the disaster is overwhelming national response capacities.

Heavy rains have “forced populations to abandon their homes and seek refuge in accommodation centres established by the Government,” the consulate stated. Many communities are now isolated due to ruined roads and bridges.

The human toll is severe, but the damage to Mozambique’s economic foundations is also extensive. The housing sector has been decimated, with authorities reporting 4,971 houses completely destroyed, 11,433 partially destroyed, and a further 82,609 flooded.

Critical infrastructure has been crippled. Nearly 3,000 kilometres of roads were affected, with over 448 kilometres significantly damaged. The collapse of power lines, damage to 57 health units, and the disruption of 7 water supply systems have compounded the humanitarian crisis.

The disaster has also shattered livelihoods and education. Damage to 318 schools has disrupted learning for over 132,000 students. The agricultural sector, a lifeline for the population, suffered devastating losses with 166,308 hectares of cropland affected and 61,627 livestock animals killed.

Framing the disaster as a consequence of climate change, Mozambican officials are appealing for humanitarian aid from private and public institutions as well as individuals in Macau, Hong Kong, and China’s Greater Bay Area.

“The Republic of Mozambique is being ravaged by floods,” the request reads, appealing for support “to alleviate the suffering affecting the Mozambican populations.”

Priority needs include clothing, hygiene kits, medicines, non-perishable food, educational materials, household goods, and agricultural supplies to help survivors “rebuild their lives.”

How to Donate

The consulate outlined channels for assistance. In-kind donations can be delivered to its offices in Macau or to a designated logistics warehouse in Guangzhou, China. Financial donations are being accepted in Macau Patacas (MOP) or US Dollars (USD) via two dedicated bank accounts at the Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU).

The floods are the latest in a series of climate-related disasters to hit Mozambique, a country highly vulnerable to cyclones and extreme weather, raising repeated calls for increased international climate adaptation funding.
