Study shows 15-year decline in physical fitness among Macau children and teenagers

A new study by University of Macau researchers reveals a 15-year decline in physical fitness among children and adolescents in Macau, highlighting widening inequalities in cardiorespiratory fitness and muscular strength, and emphasising the urgent need for targeted school and community interventions to safeguard young people’s health.

“A 15-Year Decline in Physical Fitness Among Children and Adolescents From the Macao Special Administrative Region (2005–2020)” is the revealing title of a research paper recently published (still ahead of print), aiming to examine “temporal trends in physical fitness among children and adolescents aged 6–18” between 2005 and 2020.

This is the third study published by a team of seven scientists, led by Siu Ming Choi of the Faculty of Education, University of Macau, who have been monitoring temporal trends in physical fitness, information that “provides valuable insight into population health that can help identify current and future physical health.”
