The “beep, beep” is a constant. In the supermarket, in a clothing store or even in the pharmacy, the soundtrack has been the same for 50 years. It is precisely five decades ago today that the bar code was born in the United States. On the other side of the Atlantic, the sequence of numbers and bars appeared that would revolutionize commerce.
“We hear six billion beeps of code coming out of the box a day on average. It’s a crazy amount”, explains João de Castro Guimarães. The manager is executive director of GS1 Portugal, the organization that in Portugal is the mother of barcodes. This non-profit organization is present in more than 150 countries, and has more than 9000 associated companies in our country.
João de Castro Guimarães has no doubts that “the bar code is among the best inventions of the last century”. And the beginning of history was written with a pack of chewing gum, as this was the first product on the entire planet to have a barcode.
