Lusophone embassies in Berlin are promoting a cinema showcase between May 18 and 28 to mark the 30th anniversary of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), featuring films from Portugal, Angola, Brazil, and Mozambique.

According to information released by the Portuguese Embassy in Berlin, the initiative aims to foster “a space for meeting and sharing,” strengthening cultural ties between Portuguese-speaking nations and both German and international audiences. The program consists of seven screenings, all starting at 18:00, organized by the embassies of Angola, Portugal, and Brazil in Berlin, with films subtitled in German and/or English.

The event opens on May 18 with the film “The Jungle” (2002), directed by Leonel Vieira and presented by the Embassy of Angola. The movie, based on the novel by Ferreira de Castro, follows the writer’s experiences in Brazil. The following day, the Portuguese Embassy will screen the documentary “Outro Sertão” (2013) by Soraia Vilela and Adriana Jacobsen. This work focuses on the time João Guimarães Rosa spent in Hamburg as a Brazilian vice-consul during the Nazi regime.

The lineup also includes “Njinga: Queen of Angola” (2013) by Sérgio Graciano, which details the life of Angolan Queen Ana de Sousa, and the Mozambican film “O Pacto — Último Desejo” (2026) by Yusson Congolo.

During the final week of the showcase, audiences can watch Fernando Lopes’ “O Delfim” (2002), an adaptation of José Cardoso Pires’ work, Bia Lessa’s “O Diabo, na Rua, no Meio do Redemoinho” (2023), inspired by “Grande Sertão: Veredas,” and “Mwana Nketo” (2021) by Satanha Cinéfilo.

“This cinematographic showcase constitutes a space for meeting and sharing, reinforcing cultural ties in the Portuguese language and promoting better understanding between Lusophone countries and the German and international public,” noted the Portuguese Embassy.

Admission to all screenings is entirely free of charge, but seating is strictly limited to the capacity of the rooms. Attendees must complete a mandatory prior registration through the specific contact details provided by the respective embassies organizing each event.
