More than 1,600 companies requested assistance to establish businesses in Portuguese-speaking countries – IPIM

Macau is actively bolstering its role as the economic platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs), achieving key metrics in business promotion and convention hosting, according to Che Weng Keong, President of the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM).

The IPIM has been using its “four platforms” method, specifically the services platform, to drive cooperation. The agency reported significant demand for these services, noting that more than 1,600 companies have requested support related to establishing centres in Portuguese-speaking countries and securing support for leading Chinese companies to establish factories in PSCs.

Furthermore, the China-Portuguese-speaking Countries Cooperation and Development Fund remains active, investing in companies developing in PSCs. In terms of trade, online and offline platforms support the acquisition of over 36,000 products from PSCs.

The agency highlighted its success in hosting major events and organizing outbound missions. An exhibition held in October featured more than 300 companies from PSCs, with a strong presence from Brazil. A dedicated training centre, in collaboration with PSCs, has also seen the participation of 5,500 people.

The IPIM representative added that the agency actively promotes Macau abroad, having organized investment forums and business meetings in various cities and countries, including Thailand and Singapore. Domestically, trade fairs across different Chinese cities in November resulted in more than 1,200 business matching sessions to promote Macau brands.

“Premiere Economy” Initiative

Che also detailed efforts to attract major brands to Macau. The current objective is to attract different hotel brands and “premiere stores” to Macau. A plan to attract these businesses was promoted in November, involving more than 500 companies, with 70% being local.

The plan includes attracting Portuguese brands to establish themselves in Macau, with a three-month application period. The success of this initiative is partly evident as over 90 premiere brands have already participated in recent IPIM-organized conventions and exhibitions.

A key future initiative involves expanding business matching to other regions. A major business matching session for economic and commercial cooperation between China and Spanish-speaking countries is scheduled to be held in Mozambique next year.
