Guangdong has low possibility of a sharp rebound of COVID-19: expert

The topic of a second infection of COVID-19 has recently attracted attention in Guangdong. What is the current situation? How can individuals better protect themselves?

On May 16, Kang Min, Director of the Institute of Infectious Disease Prevention and Control of the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that Guangdong currently sees a generally stable COVID-19 situation, with sporadic distribution, and there’s a low possibility of a sharp rebound of the epidemic.

“Monitoring results show that the number of visits to fever clinics has increased, but it is still at a low level compared with the past, for example, the peak of influenza in April,” said Kang.

According to Kang, along with the non-local XBB variants entering Guangdong and the weakening of the immunity that the population gained in the first infection, the situation in some areas has rebounded slightly, which is in line with the fluctuations in the epidemic.

In terms of surveillance of virus variants, he said that the main strains have been dominated by XBB variants. National and global studies show that the pathogenicity of the XBB variants has not changed significantly.

“The low possibility of a sharp rebound will not cause a significant impact on medical care and society,” he added.

China manages COVID-19 with measures against Class B infectious diseases. In this regard, Kang said that this shows that novel coronavirus infection is still an infectious disease that needs attention and focuses on prevention and control.

“We should keep a healthy lifestyle and hand hygiene,” Kang suggested that if people with weakened immune systems go to crowded places or join in gatherings, they could wear masks and prepare hand sanitizer. If symptoms have appeared, they could rest at home.
