The Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who is imprisoned, said in this fourth fair that investigators will open the name of an “absurd” process of terrorism against him that could sentence him to more than 30 years in prison.
Navalny, a former lawyer who has gained notoriety lampooning President Vladimir Putin’s elite and alleging vast corruption, is serving combined sentences of 11 years and a half for fraud and disrespect to the court on charges that, second, were engineered to silence him.
The 46-year-old opposition leader participated in a hearing in a Moscow court via video link at the fourth fair, dressed in the black jacket of a Russian prisoner and looking skinny, as part of a process of extremism, reported Reuters reporters in court .
It was the first time he had been seen in public since his allies revealed earlier this month that he was suffering from a stomach ache in prison that could be some kind of slow-acting poison. He smiled and jumped with the reporters until his video link was silenced.
