Climate change threatens 1 billion children, warns NGO

The effects of climate change threaten 1 billion children, and the general standard of living of children around the world has stagnated in the last decade, warned on Wednesday the NGO KidsRights.

The Covid-19 pandemic has also had a major impact on children. The shortage of food and medicine caused the death of 286,000 children under the age of 5, according to the Dutch NGO’s annual study.

The KidsRights index annually ranks 185 countries according to their compliance with the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, based on UN data. Iceland, Sweden, Finland and the Netherlands lead the 2022 ranking, which ends with the Central African Republic, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and Chad.

The 2022 study is “alarming to our current and future generations of children,” said Marc Dullaert, founder and president of KidsRights. “A rapidly changing climate now threatens your future and your basic rights.”

“There has been no significant progress in children’s standard of living in the last decade. In addition, their livelihoods have been severely affected by the pandemic,” added Dullaert.

For the first time in two decades, the number of working children has risen to 160 million, an increase of 8.4 million in the last four years, according to the KidsRights index.

The study highlights, however, the progress of some countries, such as Bolivia, which reduced the number of child labor accidents by almost half, or Angola, which reduced the mortality of children under 5 by more than half.

Switzerland, which ranked second last year, dropped to 31st, “due to insufficient application of the principle of the ‘best interests of children’ in decisions that affect them,” the NGO reported.
