Situated in central China, the city, with 13 million inhabitants, is known for the Terracotta Army, buried with China’s first Emperor.
Xi’an is also the destination of the only air connection between Portugal and China, which has since been suspended, for a total period of six weeks, after cases of infection with the new coronavirus were detected on two flights from Lisbon.
China is one of the last countries to implement a “zero cases” strategy of covid-19, which implies the lockdown of entire cities, mass testing and isolation in designated facilities of all positive cases and respective direct contacts, always that an outbreak is detected.
The country has also kept borders practically closed since March 2020.
Flights to China are subject to the “circuit breaker” policy, in which when five or more cases are detected on board, the connection is suspended for two weeks. If ten or more cases are identified, the call is suspended for one month.
The city of Xi’an has recorded 18 positive cases, caused by the highly contagious Ómicron variant, since Saturday, according to local authorities.
