US cuts exchange programs with China as “propaganda tools”

The US State Department announced on Friday that it had cut five China-funded exchange programs with the United States, calling them “propaganda tools.”

The five programs, conducted under a US law called MECEA, which allows US government officials to travel using funds from a foreign government, were “disguised as cultural exchanges,” said United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in a statement.

However, “while other programs founded under the auspices of MECEA are mutually beneficial, the five programs in question are fully funded and operated by the Government of the People’s Republic of China as propaganda instruments,” said Pompeo.
