China approves new amendment to law prohibiting insult to national flag

The Standing Committee of the Congress of China approved amendments to a law that criminalizes insulting the national flag and emblem after anti-government protesters profaned the Chinese flag.

In accordance with the new amendment to the National Flag Law and the National Emblem Law, which will come into force on January 1, 2021, anyone who intentionally burns, maimed, painted, disfigured or disfigured the flag and emblem in public will be investigated by criminal liability.

The law also provides that the national flag must not be discarded, displayed upside down, or used in any way that undermines their dignity.

The revised law also applies in Hong Kong and Macau.

Amendments to the law were proposed after anti-government protesters stepped on the Chinese flag in Hong Kong, sparking protests in China.

At least three protesters in Hong Kong have been convicted of desecrating the Chinese flag.
