The United States today announced the imposition of sanctions against Chinese companies and officials accused of contributing to the “militarization” of the South China Sea, an area that is the subject of territorial claims by Beijing.
These sanctions are part of a new and strengthened political approach, announced in mid-July by the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, to fight Beijing’s “illegal” claims in the South China Sea, as well as taking place in a context of worsening tensions between the two great world powers.
In a statement, the head of US diplomacy threatens to continue “to apply measures as long as Beijing continues to behave coercively in the South China Sea”.
