London criticizes veto of opposition candidates in Hong Kong

British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab on Thursday criticized the veto imposed on at least 12 Hong Kong opposition Democratic candidates by the Election Commission, while tensions between Britain and China are mounting.

Raab regretted that this decision “prevents opposition candidates” from participating in the next semi-autonomous legislative elections, scheduled for September 6 and that the authorities are evaluating the possibility of being postponed due to the new coronavirus.

“It is clear that they were disqualified for their political positions, which undermines the integrity of the‘ One country, two systems’ concept and the rights and freedoms guaranteed in the joint declaration and basic Hong Kong law,” said the head of British diplomacy.
