Pandemic is reaching maximum speed in Africa

The director of the African Union’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention, John Nkengasong, says the pandemic is reaching maximum speed in Africa, calling for widespread use of masks.

The death toll in Africa due to the covid-19 rose this Thursday to 12,206. Another 251 in the last 24 hours, in about 522,000 cases, according to the most recent data on the continent’s pandemic.

According to the African Union’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the number of infected people has risen to 522,104, more than 14018 in the last 24 hours. While the number of recovered is 254,361, more than 9293.

Southern Africa has the highest number of cases (233,016) and accounts for 3724 deaths. The vast majority are concentrated in South Africa, the country with the most victims, with 224,665 cases and 3602 deaths.

“We have crossed the critical number of 500,000 cases, the pandemic is reaching maximum speed. Therefore, I would like to make an appeal to the continent: we must be courageous, bold and deliberate in the implementation of public health measures in general, ”said John Nkengasong.
