The supply of informal jobs collapsed

Of the total of 4.9 million jobs cut, 3.7 million came from informality.

A pandemic of the new coronavirus caused the pillar that had been supporting the labor market to collapse.

Informal work, which had been hitting the back of the record and reducing unemployment taxes, suffered a severe strain in the quarter ended in April, according to data from IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) released on Thursday (28).

Of the 4.9 million vacancies closed in the period, 3.7 million were informal. An informality index dropped to 38.8% of the employed population – a contingent of 34.6 million Brazilians, or the lowest number in the series started in 2016. In the previous quarter, until January, the percentage had been 40.7% .
