Zambian leader wishes Kaunda happy 96th birthday

Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Tuesday paid tribute to former leader Kenneth Kaunda, one of Africa’s foremost liberation icons, on his 96th birthday anniversary.

The Zambian leader said he admires Kaunda’s gallant for the country’s independence struggle and for the fight for the liberation of other countries in southern Africa.

In a letter of congratulations, the Zambian leader said the story of Africa could not be told without the mentioning of Kaunda’s name.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is also African Union (AU) chairperson, commended Kaunda for his contribution to the struggle for independence in Africa. He said the former president has continued to be a motivating factor to the current leadership in Africa.

Kaunda ruled Zambia from 1964 when the country got independence to 1991. He also worked hard in promoting the relationship between China and Zambia.

Kaunda is seen as a pillar in the building of the relation between the two countries. Kaunda’s connection to China dates back to the 1960s when he went to seek China’s help for the construction of a railway line.
