With no rule of social distance, hundreds of Nicaraguans gathered this Friday (11) in the southern city of Masatepe to “drag Judas”, a tradition of Holy Week promoted by the government.
The tradition was watched from afar by several residents who chose to stay at home for fear of contracting the virus and distrust of official figures that indicate only eight cases of Covid-19 in Nicaragua.
Father Edwin Román, from the church of San Miguel de Masaya, told AFP that the government is promoting these activities to “spread the word that there is normality” in the country. Catholic authorities have suspended all festivities to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
