Guinean MP applies term of identity and residence to Minister of Justice

The Guinea-Bissau Public Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday applied the term of identity and residence to the Minister of Justice, Ruth Monteiro, but without any evidence, lawyer Luís Vaz Martins told Lusa.

“Despite the fact that the Public Ministry does not have evidence that Ruth Monteiro kept the vehicles and even with the presentation of evidence made by the Minister herself, the Public Ministry decided to apply the term of identity and residence,” said the defense attorney of the Minister.

According to Luís Vaz Martins, the Public Ministry decided to apply that coercion measure because the minister has dual nationality (Portuguese-Guinean) and can escape, but the term of identity and residence does not prevent people from traveling.

“They applied the term of identity and residence. For all purposes and considering that the minister has a national double and can run away, she applied the term of identity and residence. In reality she can travel”, she stressed.

“Not even the prosecutor at the Regional Court of Bissau has the competence to hear the minister for the facts verified, but a prosecutor and the Court of Appeal,” said Luís Vaz Martins, stressing that the prosecution process has no legs for floor.
